Smart growth is a series of strategies and initiatives designed to help communities plan for and accommodate new growth in ways that preserve their economic prosperity, environmental health, and community character.

What is Smart Growth?
By now, you've surely heard phrases like "smart growth," "sprawl," and "sustainable development" when you read the newspaper, listen to your local leaders speak, or talk to your neighbors. But does anybody really know what these terms mean? We'll try to shed a little light on these issues here.

Sprawl: The Opposite of Smart Growth
When something "sprawls," it extends and spreads out in a straggling, disorderly fashion. Consequently, "sprawl development" is a land use development pattern in which homes, roads, shopping areas, and offices extend out across the land in a straggling, haphazard way.


New Jersey's State Development and Redevelopment Plan has drawn national attention for its potential to guide New Jersey's growth in a way that leads to sustainable development, i.e., development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future New Jerseyans to meet their own needs.
