Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride assert cyclists' right to the road. The idea started in San Francisco in September 1992, and quickly spread to cities all over the world. This site attempts to be the most complete guide to local Critical Mass sites around the globe. Critical Mass has a very different flavor from city to city; there's a big variety in size, respect of traffic laws (or lack thereof), interaction with motorists, and intervention by police. The site provides links to the various Critical Mass groups throughout the country.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has undertaken this project, designed to:

  • establish and maintain contact with constituents and advocacy groups with an interest in bicycle and pedestrian issues;
  • establish and maintain an information clearinghouse and technical resource that identifies significant bicycle and pedestrian policies, planning activities, implementation and construction of projects throughout the state, and provides advisory assistance to the Department and other public agencies on pedestrian and bicycle topics;
  • provide education and training to those who are charged with implementing these policy objectives, so they have a clear understanding of the benefits to be derived from these policies, are instructed in appropriate technical knowledge and skills, and work collaboratively to achieve the common goal; and
  • provide clarification on legal and technical issues by researching key concerns and by writing summary reports with recommendations that will ultimately lead to policies that support effective practices for pedestrian and bicycle travel.
