Bicycle & Pedestrian Projects
"Many communities have no sidewalks, and nowhere to walk to, which is bad for public safety as well as for our nation's physical health. It has become impossible in such settings for neighbors to greet one another on the street, or for kids to walk to their own nearby schools. A gallon of gas can be used up just driving to get a gallon of milk. All of these add up to more stress for already overstressed family lives."

-- Vice President Al Gore, in a speech announcing the Administration's Smart Growth proposals on January 11, 1999.
Bicycle or pedestrian facilities can be defined as sidewalks, designated bike routes along roadways, off road multi-use or single-use trails in parks and open spaces, along old railway lines or on-street bike-lanes.

Because so many of us spend so much time in our cars, it can be easy to forget that there are other transportation alternatives, and the oldest ones - walking and bicycling - are often treated as orphan issues in town planning projects and state transportation policies. However, projects such as well-designed bicycle lanes and sidewalks should not be neglected - biking and walking are viable, affordable, clean means of transportation that benefit both the society and the individual immensely.

The goal of smart growth is to find smarter ways of using our land. And part of this equation is making smart transportation investments that strategically support smart land use decisions. We need a network where the goal is to move people - not just cars. Transportation projects are major investments. They can become the catalyst for economic development and neighborhood revitalization.
